The History of Kingfisher Barn - Abingdon

Oxfordshire Accommodation to suit all the family - Wheelchair users welcome, and we are pet friendly too!

The site at Kingfisher Barn was created by converting old farm buildings. Made of red brick and tile for the smaller cottages and stone and handmade tiles for the large lodges, these barns ooze charm and history. The Oxfordshire buildings dating back as far as the 17th century became redundant for farming practices in the 1970's. When machinery grew larger, they were unable to enter the buildings, so the farmer built new, much more significant modern buildings over the hill.

Barn Conversions Into Beautiful Holiday Cottages Including B&B

In 1994 the buildings, starting with the main stone barn, were converted to provide a holiday base for national groups and organisations to come and use. The local community also used the main stone barn for a range of activities including a weekly creative art space, musical events, indoor bowling as well as a very popular wedding reception venue.

The next set of buildings to be renovated was the old cow biers around the courtyard next to the main barn. These were turned into 10 en-suite holiday bedrooms and proved a great success with many groups from all over the UK who hired the whole site for weeks at a time. Some of these groups had a range of special needs, and so we adapted the accommodation to suit their needs right from the start. We are proud to say that many happy holidays and long weekends have made some exceptional people very happy over the years.

Grand Oxfordshire Accommodation - The Next Stage

After the courtyard came the adjacent yard that now houses three self-catering cottages. Stable, Hazel and Granary Cottage, as well as our very own Abingdon, heated indoor pool. The cottages were converted from the old bullpens and cart shed, and so the history goes on. Stable Cottage still retains its very high ceilings and was in fact originally indoor stables for 3 giant shire horses. The horses would have worked tirelessly with the heavy workload before the farm was mechanised.

Further Kingfisher Barn Changes

In 2000 it was agreed that the main barn would be changed into new self-catering holiday accommodation, the best that Abingdon offers! Two large lodges, Kyte and Kestrel, were built, as well as the Nest and Studio loft apartments. The barn lodges are very spacious, great for family reunions/group get-togethers and also the perfect location for a wedding gathering or just to enjoy a relaxing self-catering holiday.

Our accommodation in this delightful part of Oxfordshire has catered to folk with special needs for many years. In fact, some of our accommodation have tracking for hoists and wet room bathrooms. Also, we can provide a mobile electric hoist/ cot sides/shower chairs plus universal slings. All of our equipment you can hire with prior agreement on booking.

Kingfisher Barn Staff

The staff team is small and made up predominantly of local Abingdon ladies both in the office as well as housekeeping, working alongside a handyman. Together they perform a great job of running and maintaining the site of Kingfisher Barn. Our dedicated staff like to focus on making your holiday stay as comfortable and as stress-free as possible.

For guests who may need extra reassurance, there is also a 24-hour on-call phone number situated on at the entrance of reception and in all welcome packs in the rooms/lodges for out-of-hours emergencies.

Charity Links - Abingdon's Best-Kept Secret!

Originally Kingfisher Barn was set up to work with national charities and organisations, and we are so proud that many of these still come to stay every year.

The Company makes a contribution of 10% of the annual profit to charities; this may be a global or local organisation. In 2009 Kingfisher Barn supported The Smile Train, an amazing charity that performs remedial cleft pallet work for children in situations of poverty. Visit the Smile Train website to find out more.

In 2010 the owners of Kingfisher Barn took up fundraising for the Smile Train by taking part in a rally from Peking to Paris. The rally endured  14500km of very tough terrain, often without any roads, and included China, Mongolia. Also, the rally crossed sections of the Gobi Desert, Russia, many Stans, Iran, Greece, Italy, France and finishing in Paris.

It was a trip of a lifetime and made more exciting in the fact that the vehicle was made of wood and iron and started life as a fire tender in 1919! The trip was very successful, and many 'Smiles' raised.

Local Area

Historical Abingdon became the county town of Berkshire sometime after receiving its Royal Charter in 1556. It is a market town and civil parish in England.

This breathtaking town located just six miles south-west of Oxford was formally a county town of Berkshire but had a slight name change in 2012 to become Abingdon-on-Thames.

Abingdon town centre refurbished in 2007 as part of the council's redevelopment plan took on a great new look. All work was in keeping with the surrounding area.

Come and discover this delightful town for yourself, explore and learn its history, there's so much to see and do!

In 1084, William the Conqueror celebrated and enjoyed Easter at the Abbey. He then left his son, the future Henry I, to be educated there.
